The folks at YouTube must have set some insane new years resolutions. January isn’t even over yet and they’ve already unleashed subscription enhancements, HTML5 support, video rentals, and a slick music feature called Disco. Well, YouTube is keeping the productivity train rolling and busting out a complete redesign of the watch page and search functionality. Check it out :
The Old Watch Page
The NEW Watch Page
What’s New ?
Overall Cleaner Look
Almost all unnecessary text has been removed keeping the focus on the video itself. The video description has been moved underneath the video, comments and video responses are listed below that, and related videos run along the right rail.
Look Ma, No Stars
YouTube has been talking about the effectiveness of the 5 star rating system for some time now, and it looks like it didn’t make the cut. Instead you get the option to either ‘like’ a video or give it a ‘thumbs down’. Works for me!
HD You Can Understand
No more guessing what the quality of your video playback is. YouTube now allows you to select what type of p-ness you’d like to watch your video in ![]()

Smart Related Videos
The related videos on the right side of the watch page now change based on context. For example, if you come to a video through the search function, you will see additional search results on the right hand side for you to watch afterwards.
Find All Videos Uploaded by a User
I like this new feature a lot. The video uploader’s user name (located directly above the video) now has an expand button to show all videos uploaded:

Watch While you Search
Perhaps the coolest new feature is the ability to search for new videos to watch without interrupting the video you are currently watching. When you hit search, the video you are currently watching will shrink into the upper left hand corner of the screen making room for the search results:

You can't revert to the old accounts. For some reason, YouTube is being arrogant and wants every channel to transition to the beta channels.

I'm sure the entire YouTube community will miss your winning personality.
March 6th, 2010 at 3:14 pm
I “nofollow” the links in the comment board, so your spammy username/comments are a total wasted effort. If this is what you do for your clients, they'll get on the first page alright….of Google's shit list. Zing !!
March 6th, 2010 at 3:16 pm
OK, now you're just embarrassing yourself. Two shitty comments on the same post ? Go SEO somewhere else !
March 8th, 2010 at 6:02 am
Check out this awesome new grungy yet elegant youtube layout. Looking for a grunge layout? Check this grunge destruction youtube layout. ok
March 8th, 2010 at 9:56 am
some aspects of the new layout are good – i guess people just dont like change but what i dont like is it seems to take ages to save a video to my favourites or playlists – in fact i havent been able to do it just yet…any suggestions? and where have the url's gone on videos?
March 8th, 2010 at 10:24 pm
All I can see is a like and dislike button… I tried liking a video and looking in my favourites, not there.
March 9th, 2010 at 5:34 pm
the new layout is ok. auto play is a pain in the ass.the worst thing is it always comes up with errors on page and i cant watch anymore vids this has never happened befofe. now its about half the time. IT IS SHIT. if it aint broke dont fix it.
March 9th, 2010 at 10:28 pm
Interesting. Where are you going to add videos to your playlists ? I was able to add my newest video to an existing playlist and I saw it appear immediately. Were you trying to add another user's video ?
Also, I'm not sure what you mean about the video URLs
March 9th, 2010 at 10:33 pm
I can't say I've been having any major problems with the new layout, at least not to the point where it would stop playing videos. What browser/version are you using ?
The one thing I don't like with the new watch page is how they downplayed the 'Subscribe' button. I think its in a slightly better place above the video, but I'm not sure why they decided to make it gray.
March 10th, 2010 at 7:02 pm
I hate it. More than anything in the world. Enough to write a massive, hateful note about it. So here goes.
It is now officially impossible to distinguish videos that are worth watching on YouTube from ones that aren't, as they got rid of the perfectly user friendly five-star rating format that has been in use for the last five years. They replaced the rating system to a “Like” or “Don't Like” system that doesn't actually appear to do anything. It does not give any statistics on the actual number of likes or dislikes, and it does not measure the quality of the work. Now, one can only attempt to discern good videos from bad ones by looking at the hit count. This means the videos with the most hits already will get more and more popular, while nobody will click on the videos with under a thousand hits because there's no way of telling if it is going to be complete crap or not. I know I wouldn't want to waste my time watching a video with fewer hits when I could click on one with a million, even though the only reason people are watching the million-hitter is because it had more hits in the first place. It is a sick cycle that can never be broken.
YouTube also decided to get rid of the “More From This User” sidebar. This makes finding videos from the same person a tremendous pain in ass, because you have to navigate through their profile to find what you want to watch, instead of just effortlessly clicking on the links right next to what you just watched. By taking out that sidebar, YouTube made more room to put related videos which in most cases aren't actually related to what you are watching at all.
And Fuck you, Vevo. You are the bastard child of Google and a dying record label. I don't want to watch music videos on you, I want to watch them on YouTube, so quit redirecting me there.
March 11th, 2010 at 2:15 pm
i hate the new layout
March 11th, 2010 at 10:10 pm
You hate the new YouTube layout more than anything in the world? Really? More than cancer ? (My sincere apologies if the new layout killed one of your immediate family members)
Alright, time to get serious…
I think you bring up an interesting point about the ratings. I didn't notice that YouTube no longer shows totals next to each one. I hope they bring that one back.
March 15th, 2010 at 7:15 am
Hate the new layout for one reason. Can't distinguish shit videos from good ones.
EXACTLY what youtube wants so their dam sponsor videos don't get voted down to one stars where most of them belong.
March 15th, 2010 at 9:11 am
Interesting point. If the new YouTube layout shows more Shane Dawson videos than the old one I'll be pissed as well !
March 20th, 2010 at 3:10 am
The new layout sucks harder than a Nilfisk. It's typical of some bloody manager who decided it was time he actually DID something so that' when he came up with the idea of making things worse. Much worse.
March 20th, 2010 at 10:56 pm
It has nothing to do with the fact that I don't like change. I don't like change that negatively affects the way things run or operate.
As Andy stated above, you cannot distinguish between good videos and poor videos. The only thing that shows up in the new system is “most liked.” It's absolutely ridiculous.
The only thing I disagree with him on is the “more from this user” feature. There is one – it's above the video next to the channel name in a drop down. However, it is a little more awkward as it drops right in front of the video you are watching.
I suppose I'll get used to it though, just like you have to get used to every other website remodel. It's not like they would listen to us anyway, even if we begged them to change it.
March 22nd, 2010 at 3:55 am
I really really like the new rating system. In my case I have a 13 yr old kid who has 15+ accounts which he uses to rate my videos all 1 star (he actually is a troll who does it to many people). I HATE seeing my videos are 4.5 because of him… with the new rating system though I can just see that it's only “1 dislike” and that is much easier to ignore than an over all rating change.
On the other hand, the look overall is really ugly. I feel it doesn't look smooth at all. However I put up with it simply because I liked the rating system better.
March 22nd, 2010 at 3:57 am
I see your point, but it's also a good way to get rid of youtube trolls who just vote everything 1 start with 15+ accounts because they have no life.
March 22nd, 2010 at 10:15 am
I meant to say the same thing regarding the “more from this user” feature. I think it is more prominent and I'm interested to see if it generates more related video views if broadly released.
I also agree that it would be nice to show a total number of likes or percentage of likes vs. not likes next to the “most liked” graphic.
March 22nd, 2010 at 10:21 am
I didn't think about how the new rating system might actually help make tube trolls less effective.
BTW, I also subscribed to your YouTube channel, so keep the videos coming.
March 28th, 2010 at 10:47 pm
IT SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YOU CAN'T DO ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
April 1st, 2010 at 4:09 am
I hate it, I hate it, I hate it, I hate it. I know i'm being a baby, but it sucks. Youtube have really out done it's self this time.
First they f—ed up searching (I'm looking for videos WTF is up with this messy cascade thing?) now the perfect layout is gone.
It makes my comp crash, the videos don't pkay, it's ugly, I miss the stars, I miss the 'more' part, I hate the way you can scroll thought the videos anymore.
F— Google. F— Facebook.

April 1st, 2010 at 4:23 pm
Absolutely HORRIBLE. It's awful. So bad that I'm not going back on youtube until they fix this shit. AND there isn't a video URL anymore so I can't download any videos!
It sucks balls. I hate it and I hate youtube.
April 1st, 2010 at 8:54 pm
The author is clearly .. retarded (like the new layout)
April 2nd, 2010 at 6:29 am
It's like everything else in this modern era …so-called continual improvement …change 4 changes sake!!… they get something that is classic and unbelievably user-friendly that works well, that ppl are happy with, but unfortunately someone will have 2 be seen 2 be doing their job by ruining everything 4 U !!!. Then they patronize you with comments like ” We're making things easier 4 U “— No, what they're actually doing IS creating a scenario whereby access 2 unbelievably naff vids WITH ADVERTS can be watched, rather than having U wasting time by reading each others comments ( which I can no longer read without the aid of reading glasses) and inter-acting with each other !!. Don't get me wrong I know U-tube wouldn't exist without them, but let's be honest….is that really why folks sign up with U-tube,–No it isn't !!!.It seems like U-tube is exactly the same as the major world governments and top world sporting events……the industrialists and advertisers call the shots ….not the ppl !!!
April 2nd, 2010 at 10:59 pm
You are the gayest thing on the Internet and your very presence online makes people yearn for a penis. I hope you are beaten to death by baseball-bat wielding super squirrels. If not maybe your stupidity will kill you, your brain will simply say fuck it and shut down. Either way you would no longer be posting dumb shit like this so it's a plus. Fucking fag. Eat a bowl of die.
April 3rd, 2010 at 10:14 am
You are obviously the straightest person on the Internet.
April 3rd, 2010 at 3:53 pm
i would pay money just to have the old one back
April 3rd, 2010 at 5:03 pm
It sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
April 3rd, 2010 at 8:40 pm
How do you post a fucking comment?!
the design sucks balls! i dont know how to even post a fucking comment!
April 5th, 2010 at 7:56 pm
it fucking sucks my huge big balls and it sucks on my huge fat dick and then it starts raping me in the butt and it really feels gay. ohh my god it sucks so bad.
No seriously the layout is not that bad. People just are whiny pussy bitches.
April 6th, 2010 at 10:24 am
I don't see that as a bad thing
April 6th, 2010 at 10:25 am
some comments should not leave your head
April 6th, 2010 at 10:28 am
you think the old design was “unbelieveably user-friendly” ? That's a bit of an overstatement.
Just because you're used to it doesn't make it the best. Google runs user testing in the background to find out how all people interact with the pages and use that data to inform their design decisions.
April 7th, 2010 at 1:05 am
I think that the new layout sucks ass. What the hell was YouTube smoking when they added this stuff? I miss the ratings and all the old stuff. It was way better the way it was.
April 7th, 2010 at 1:14 am
I don't like the new youtube layout so much, the comments are messed up for instance if you respone to someone it doesn't put your comment under there original one. Another thing is when I watch a user's playlist of videos I like to watch them on the video's page not the user's page and they took off the feature that let you auto play a playlist and sometimes I can't find the next video on the side bar. Also I prefered the star system to the thumbs up system.
April 7th, 2010 at 6:52 am
Bottom line, everyone seems to hate it. Take action youtube
April 7th, 2010 at 8:47 pm
wft was you on when you wrote this? Youtube is now shit.
April 7th, 2010 at 8:48 pm
Youtube is now offical bollocks.
April 8th, 2010 at 7:23 am
i agree 100% with you
April 8th, 2010 at 2:33 pm
this new layout…makes me want to gouge my eyes out. What the hell were they thinking? I mean, I don't care about the stars, but you CAN'T SEE THE RATING UNTIL YOU VOTE! THIS PROTECTS THE LAME/FAKE VIDEOS OUT THERE! Also, why get rid of the scrolling list of related vids on the video pages? you have to REMOVE THE PLAYING VIDEO FROM YOUR PERIPHERAL VISION JUST TO SEE ALL THE DARN RELATED MOVIES!!! WTF!!! And the homepage! I had a nice layout before this JUNK! I mean, I had 2 panels, one for subscription vids, and one for recommended vids. now I've got each individual subscription getting its own row (a waste of space, because some might have only 1 vid, while others have more than 5 and you don't even get to see the other 2 that won't fit on the damn row), and some rows are populated by vids that my subscriptions LIKED, bunch of crap if you ask me. This is just…abominable! Someone needs to come up with like, an alternate website and call it Old-youtube, with an interface that DOESN'T SUCK! Or maybe a firefox plugin that takes the data and organizes it into something manageable! Call it Youtube Fixer or something, but JEEEZ!!!! Comon!
April 8th, 2010 at 3:49 pm
The comment section now majorly sucks. Any good business knows that you have to keep your customers happy or they will go elsewhere to companies (websites) that actually cater to them. The vast majority of YouTubers can't stand the new, regressive, layout. It's substandard, unimproved, and overall shitty. They could have, at least, given us the option to use the crappy new layout or keep using the far better old version. If a new video sharing website is developed with everything the users of it actually like, people will abandon YouTube in droves for that one, especially if it's developers listen to what it's users have to say to improve upon it instead of ignoring them.
April 9th, 2010 at 3:20 pm
SUCKS BALLS
April 9th, 2010 at 8:18 pm
Wow! The new layout sucks a fat one! No more 5-star rating system? No “more from this user”? What the hell man? I guess some C.E.O. at youtube has his head up his ass! It doesn't even look any better. What's next? No video discriptions? No comments? No related videos? What was the point in doing this? We were all perfectly happy with the past layout. They had absolutely no reason to do this at all! Oh youtube…. Ur breakin my balls.
April 10th, 2010 at 2:04 am
Most of you posting on this blog about Youtube's new layout say “It's change you idiots! Things need to progress! Gahh, get a grip!”
Alright then you self-righteous pricks let me ask you this: Have you EVER heard of something like… “Trying to change something to make it good BUT… in the end it comes out all wrong?” For example, the Healthcare Bill? It's progress yes but really it's s*** because it's been watered down to please those bitching and moaning on the Radio.
Don't know about any of you, but the old layout's rating system (star system) made it easier to see which video on a certain subject is worth the watch or not. And please, the Old layout was never user-friendly? Come on! Even a repuke can figure it all out.
If you're gonna make change, get it right.
April 12th, 2010 at 5:18 am
hes right its a bag of wank
April 12th, 2010 at 11:27 am
fuck off ballbag wankstick
April 12th, 2010 at 12:29 pm
And this is why I deleted my youtube channel. Yet another site that will make it so Disney and other entities who do not need more exposure, publicity or advertising will get more and the user who actually thought “youtube” meant a place for personal expression will be left to fade in to obscurity. There is no “you” in youtube any more – it should be called “what we think is popular tube” or “more of the same tube.” That would be more accurate.
April 12th, 2010 at 1:58 pm
Does anyone know a way to get the old layout back?
The new one is completely RUBBISH.
The new rating thing…What if someone dosen't like it, but thinks it's worth 2 stars? Would they click 'Thumps Up', or 'Thumbs Down'?
And the more from this user sidebar, they NEED that, it's so hard to find it now. TT^TT
And how do you find out if anyones faved it or not? And the way they do the comments…Weird…
April 12th, 2010 at 3:06 pm
it looks exactly like Google Videos
Fuck this shit..
its obvious that the main reason behind all this ''change'' is the new big players that are now all over utube and are selling their videos and the advertisers Those are the ones who didn't want the 5star rating system because everyone gave them 1 star
April 13th, 2010 at 5:58 pm
so shit
April 15th, 2010 at 10:23 am
I used to comment lots on vids. It was very interesting reading other people's opinions on the subject matter. Now it's harder to read and follow different communication lines. I don't get nearly the amount of responses I used to because of this and so further discussions on it fall through. This makes it less appealing. Just search 'new youtube layout' and you'll see most of the comments are very negative. If another vid sharing site pops up that has everything the old YouTube layout had with improvements to various things (like making it harder to flag videos inappropriately), people would abandon YouTube for that one in droves.
April 15th, 2010 at 9:31 pm
I agree. And what's even worse is that now the videos won't frigging play- every video I watch suddenly stops and tells me to download the new Flash Player, but on any other website it's embedded in, it works fine! Not only that, but removing copyrighted material susks too. In conclusion, the new Youtube is shit.
April 16th, 2010 at 12:45 am
I've been trying to give it time and I don't hate it quite as much. I hate it about 90% as much as I hated it when it first debuted. Ball sucking shit eating lameness!
April 18th, 2010 at 12:45 pm
LOL. You took YouTube's 'claims' to a better redesigned and paraphrased them. Clearly, you have NEVER seen the redesign. IT SUCKS.
April 24th, 2010 at 5:26 pm
I am a web developer and can usually see why popular websites go through a major redevelopment and most of the time it is totally necessary and I stand up for these websites that get a bad time because people generally don't like change.
But I am completely lost for words with the new YouTube layout, it's utter shite! I mean, what the hell were they thinking! The best and most user friendly thing about YouTube was its rating system, which gave people, who uploaded quality content, the recognition they deserve. Now it's just whoever has had the most views… gets more views.
This is what I hate about sites that have monopolies over certain areas, it's not like you can turn elsewhere for just as much video content. It's basically a like it or lump it approach.
I think this is a good opportunity for someone to develop an alternative video repository site, because judging from the responses here, there are many people who would like to say fuck off YouTube, you stupid, stupid bastards.
April 26th, 2010 at 12:52 am
This youtube layout features hearts throughout the layout. The Grunge heart yt background is a hot pink and has a black, warped grunge surrounding.
April 28th, 2010 at 6:01 pm
The new layout makes absolutely no sense from a design perspective:
Some basic rules are being broken:
Less clicks – better, more clicks – worse.
Hidden menus – bad, open menus – good.
Pop out menus – bad, scroll menus – good.
Intrusive advertising – bad, unintrusive advertising – good (Google practically invented this with their pertinent and small adverts, can't understand why they've done this to youtube)
Simple layout – good, complicated – bad.
STANDARDISED LAYOUT – GOOD : Can't stress this one enough, personalised homepages are a BAD BAD thing, see Myspace.
Google seem to have thrown out all the principles of good design and decided to mess with things that work. Two observations here: it is clearly to make a pay-per-click advertising model work, by giving more space and more prominence to advertisements and their own chosen videos. It will backfire.
Google did the same thing with this new iGoogle rubbish, and the ridiculous social networking thing with googlemail.
Someone needs to show their designers this site: http://www.useit.com/
April 28th, 2010 at 6:03 pm
Google still own youtube, right? If not I look a fool
